White, shiny, curvy devices, waiting for me on the shelf. Calling out. To be used.

They have recessed buttons, begging dirt to enter but whisking it away with superior airflow technology when it comes too close.

They have low-relief domes gliding across their sleek surfaces that mock the flat tabletop that supports them.

Their internal organs are microchips and mainframes. Their skin is a petroleum substrate, shaped in China and sold everywhere.

They are useful. They are beautiful. They are mine.

Communicating Mores

It’s amazing how dependent our every day activities are upon the level of technology we have available.

Five years ago, I would not have been able to keep up with the cultural mores of the Middle Class United States people without owning a television. Now, I haven’t owned one for a year and a half and I’m more than capable of seeing what everyone else is seeing via my mobile phone, video content on the Internet, and various other technological channels that are now available to me as a member of that class.

These technologies spread cultural mores much faster than those of the past. I would argue that part of the purpose of developing these increasingly efficient and effective methods of communication is so that we will all have a common language…some foundation to start at when trying to understand each other. When entering peace talks with an opposing nation with opposite views on everything from government to religion to civil rights, we can still all agree that Lost is confusing and Brad and Angelina are Hollywood’s hottest couple.

I thoroughly enjoy cultural events.

I will brake for conventions and get-togethers of all flavors.

Gallery openings, ballet recitals, operas and concerts and spoken word performances.

They’re all grand.

Outdoor festivals are great because I can keep an eye on my bike.

And get a little sun on me, because damn, I look pale. I need to get out more. It’s strange to live in Southern California and not have a nice tan. Get on that, Self.

Taken With Tea

I’ve taken to drinking green tea. This is a problem.

Not really a problem, I guess, so much as an issue.

You see, I quit drinking caffeine many months ago, and have been feeling great ever since.

There was a time, during a trip, where I was drinking many energy drinks a day just to stay awake.

To keep my eyes open during those hours and hours of back-country driving.

But I quit and have stayed quitted and would like to keep quitting.

Then I saw some studies that show green tea helps you burn calories. And it’s really good for you.

Antioxidants.

And I don’t like tea, so trying to integrate it would be like a challenge.

A test of will, if you will.

So I’ve taken to drinking green tea.

So far, so good.

Termites

Roaches are bad
And termites aren’t AS bad
Because they won’t survive a nuclear holocaust
Like roaches will

The termites will invest in radiation suits
Walking around in yellow
Scrubbers at the ready in the off chance
Of an un-zippered seam

They’ll munch on the remnants of our society
Not building anything out of wood themselves
That would be strange
To build one’s home out of food

Like building a fortress out of pretzel sticks
Or the Great Pyramids out of pudding
It’s just inviting trouble
And bugs
